I learned that a) my Z3 has a spare tire tucked up under the trunk b) the spare was also flat due to obvious reasons c) continental discontinued this tire in 2010, and pretty much no one else makes a 125/90 R15 that fits in the spare tire holder.

Time to remove the spare. Simplify and add lightness!

You might be onto something. Here’s a diagram of where the spare tire holder is located.
That would be a perfect place to hide my coke baggies!

Seems like Mustangs have the same problem.

Yeah, it seems like my best option is to scour ebay for an intact donut/spare combo from a ‘90s Mustang, or apparently a Volvo V40, and see if I can make it work.
Either that or just ditch the spare. #YOLO

this weekend i learned my spare is flat while changing my tires. I inflated it and did the job but then couldn;t get it back in its spot. not even close. Turns out you travel with them deflated and audi gives you a 12v travel size compressor to inflate the tire.
i also saw someone driving down the street, past a gas station, with 2 completely flat tires....

Just get a Firestone F560 125/r15. It’s 80 series instead of 90 series but that won’t make much difference, in fact it’ll give it a tad more room under there.

Thanks, I’ll have to look into that.

Interesting. My S40 does indeed use a 125/90R15 spare. It’s never been out of the well in the trunk. It seems to hold air, though I’m sure its not properly inflated (I have a compressor in the trunk, so I can always pump it up if need be). Hopefully I don’t need to replace it (though I think the well might actually be able to fit a full sized spare).
Of course even good performance oriented options for the normal 195/60R15 tires are getting hard to find, seems like mostly economy options at this point.

It’s what they use on 2cvs, which is the only reason such an odd size is still around. It’s probably the closest you’re going to get to that size.

Yeah, I know the struggle.
Bridgestone/Michelin/Goodyear all carry sport tires in 225/50 R16, but since it’s a bit of an oddball size, I had to drive almost an hour to find a Goodyear Eagle Sport locally.

Yeah, google-fu tells me old Volkswagens take those.
Might as well get a whole Karmann Ghia, just in case .

I wonder if a smaller donut tire would work though. Find an old GM in a boneyard and use that spare donut.
Is that spare stored under the car (exposed) or just in a trunk well?
Any chance you are near Boston? I mount and balance tires at home ;)

It’s exposed. And nope, I’m in St. Louis, but thanks for the offer!

...not really a good idea IMO. Tires have a shelf life of around 5-7 years, it dries up and cracks. Tire burst out is quite dangerous.
Considered just getting a pump and a repair kit? Neither my Solstice nor 328i have a spare, I just move the air compressor between the two cars and carry a plug kit each.

the 125/70/17 is 0.04" off and is skinny enough to fit, but you’d need a new rim. A ZHP uses a 17" space saver spare and should have the same bolt pattern as a Z3.

Also try a Nissan dealer, seems like the 2012 Altima uses the same size as well.

I actually just thought of that after Opposaurus mentioned that his Audi didn’t come with an inflated spare, and instead just gives you a compressor.

I saw that tire, the load rating is way off. 695 lbs vs 1565 lbs.

Pretty much every car these days don’t come with a donut, not even Tavarish’s 2012 Hyundai Sonata. Because fuel economy.

Do you think such a high load rating is necessary or just what the original spare is rated? It’d probably be fine if one actually treats the spare as a spare and not a stock tire.

Well I know for starters modern cars are much more heavier than the Beetle and 2CV. There’s a reason why manufacturers chose such a spec.
